What is Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer appears as a growth or sore in the mouth that does not go away. Oral cancer, which includes cancers of the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, and pharynx (throat), can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated early.

Early detection of abnormalities that develop in the tissues of your lips, mouth, and throat is essential in preventing potentially severe health issues from developing, such as oral cancer and other oral diseases.

Oral Cancer Screening FAQs

People over the age of 40 are most at risk for oral cancer, but you can get it at any age. People who frequently use tobacco or alcohol products also have a higher risk of getting oral cancer.
Symptoms of oral cancer include white, gray, or red patches in your mouth; sores that bleed easily inside your mouth or on your lips; pain or numbness in your mouth or on your face or neck that happens for no apparent reason and doesn't go away; and out of nowhere weight loss.
You should undergo an oral cancer screening at least once every three years and then annually after the age of 40.
Dentists conduct oral cancer screenings regularly. It's typically performed during routine dental check-ups and exams.
During an oral cancer screening, your dentist will examine your gums, tongue, tonsils, cheek lining, lips, and the floor and roof of your mouth for signs of cancer.
